For Emma and other athletes like her, unwinding after a long day of training means finding a place where they can escape the intensity of their sport and find some R&R. That’s why local boutique hotels like The Sarasota Modern make the perfect “getaway”—whether you’re an out-of-town athlete staying in one of the rooms on property or a local, like Emma, taking advantage of the day passes available to the public. Lounge on the pool deck and indulge in poolside food and drink service after a dip in the heated pool. For athletes in need of some muscle recovery, the hot tub and cold plunge pool are an added bonus. With its tropical palms and modern amenities, this hotel oasis is a standout daycation spot for a wellness reset before getting your head back into the “game.”

The rooftop is another sneaky getaway to snag a resort day pass, book a cabana by the heated pool and enjoy a craft cocktail or bite while taking in the vibrant atmosphere. The 360-degree views of downtown and Sarasota Bayfront are equally impressive here, and provide a picturesque backdrop for a day, or night, out with teammates or coaches.

Our charming city has plenty of eclectic specialty shops and local restaurants to explore—from clothing boutiques, book stores and homeware shops to trendy eateries that range from Gulf-caught seafood to Mexican, Italian, Peruvian and beyond. A few local standouts include C’est La Vie! for a healthy breakfast and fresh-baked pastries, lunch on the outdoor patio of 1592 Wood Fired Kitchen & Cocktails for Mediterranean dishes with flare, bar bites at longtime eatery Duvals Fresh Local Seafood or artisan tacos and margaritas at Circo. And when athletes want to celebrate their triumphant victories, 99 Bottles Taproom & Bottleshop is the bar to have a cheers in—with a rotating wall of craft beer from all around the world and a fun, vibey atmosphere.

The Beach

For Emma, hanging out at the beach is one of her favorite hobbies, and luckily Sarasota has its fair share of beaches to choose from. Siesta Key Beach, with its crystal-quartz sand and clear blue waters, is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Whether it’s a leisurely swim, a game of beach volleyball, an afternoon nap with your toes in the soft-white sand, or a beachside barbecue with friends or fellow athletes, Siesta Key provides an escape for either a “siesta” or “fiesta”.

Local and visiting athletes alike also love going to the UTC to keep up with their disciplined fitness regimen. When they’re not “on the field”, or in Emma’s case, “in the water,” they’re able to keep up their cardio and endurance at one of the many fitness studios and gyms in the area. From HOTWORX, CycleBar and Row House to TITLE Boxing Club, Mantra Pilates and Crunch Fitness, there is no shortage of places to work up a sweat or complement your skilled training at the UTC.
